Parakata

Parakata is a piece for clarinet quintet and electronics based off of the legend of the Parakata which means butterfly in Tarascan. Parakata is associated with monarch butterflies. The migration of the monarch butterflies coincides with Dia De Los Muertos when the monarch butterflies migrate down to Mexico for their wintering. They represent the souls of loved ones coming back for Dia de los Muertos. The electronic aspect of this piece was created in MaxMSP, and it was generated by using the migratory and population data of monarch butterflies within the past decade. The sounds were then processed in Ableton with the addition of filters and effects. Throughout the entirety of the piece, the electronic music is connected and the changes to the sounds provides a continuity to the metamorphosis of its sound.
